Wednesday Waste-products and Driving horse teams

Chickens are the masters of poop. See this:

Poop on the floor

Poop on an egg
Poop on the water-er

Poop in the nest box

Yes, chickens poop everywhere.  In the wild, this isn't a bad thing.  Their manure is spread out.  However, we are keeping these chickens in reasonably confined area (the whole farm--they are free-range, after all) and we have to deal with the droppings.  It wouldn't be so bad if they dropped only on the floor.  They perch and poop on their watering container.  They perch and poop on the edges of their nest boxes.  And then, poop gets on the eggs.  They don't seem to mind it and make no efforts, like our dear horses, to have separate biffy boxes...  We clean out the nest boxes each day and then once a week, we shovel out the poop on the floor.  We mix the poop/wood-shavings into our compost piles and reap the nitrogen!

Our group experienced the first of two days at horse school on Fair Winds Farm.  We learned the signals that help a horse trust us and help us to make ourselves understood to the horse.  We practiced on one another, then on a post.  Then we learned to walk a horse, apply the harness and were treated to a ride around the farm.   After lunch, we practiced driving one horse and then two-horse skills.  Wow, what an experience.  Jay and Janet are such gracious and experienced farmers; we are fortunate to spend time with them.
