Saturday Rest

Here at the Farm School, we have the weekends off, mostly.  We are on chore rotation--once every five weekends--and plenty of time to rest, relax, spend time with friends and work on homework assignments.

I took a walk down a road on Maggie's Farm that leads to Tully Brook.  I was in search of trees for our tree identification assignment as well as wanting to see the brook.

Pine tree with fungus
This pine tree was cut down on the path. I loved the way the person cut it--right through a whorl of branches so it made this star-shaped design.  The fungus is just icing on the cake... sort of.

Pine wood is used for timber-frame building.  Our Farm School class is building a shed for the saw mill at Sentinel Elm farm.  In previous weeks, we learned to use the saw mill, built saw horses and began drawing out the mortises and tenons for the frame.  Here are a few shots from previous weeks, working on our pine posts and beams:

Back to the walk:  The road turns into a trail as one approaches the brook.  The woods shift from maple and oak trees to an evergreen forest of pine and hemlock.  Finally, the brook is found!

As farmer-trainees, we get the day off.  We know that farmers don't get "days off" but a wander down through the wood-lot is well worth the trip.
