Today we began learning about the tools available to us on the farm. Farmers must be able to perform all the basic repairs on their structures--aiming for safety first, then competence and confidence. It is nice that we can learn to use power tools to accomplish the maintenance needs of Maggie's Farm.
We began by receiving several "gifts" from Olivier and then using them right away!

How to carry lumber--or "lumbering along" to quote Emily. |
After lunch, some of us worked on winterizing the pullets' coop--these young birds will stay in the smaller coop until the older layer hens are sent out for processing and there is more room in the big coop.

Brian lining up the screw to attach siding to the portable coop. |
While we worked on the coop, others began their training on the tractor. There is an obstacle course that prepares us for the beginning challenges with this tool. There are also points to be scored for accuracy. For fun, of course.

The sun shone on Emily as she practiced her skills. |
After our work periods were complete, we set out to do our chores. When we visit the sheep in the afternoon, we check on their water, minerals, quality of pasture and, should any sheep be laying down, make sure they can stand up.

This is just a beauty shot... |
