Today we spent the day with the Green Team of Lawrence MA working on an urban farm/park. These high schoolers and their adult staff have been planning for a beautiful garden and came to visit Sentinel Elm back in November (see Thursday November 11)

From the top of the park--note empty dumpster |
We drove into the city in the morning and stepped out of the van. This is what we saw:
|
Our first view of the park |
We circled up with the farmers from Sentinel Elm and the Green Team and revisited the plans for the site--raised bed gardens, a cultivatable area, a meeting area, bees, etc. Then the rules of the game--wear gloves, pick up items carefully, stack tires here and steel there and enjoy!

Looking up the park from the base of the garden |
The transformation from trash filled lot to easily-visualized urban park was thrilling. I look forward to our next trip in to install garden boxes, arbors, and bee hives.
|
Hearing the story of the garden |
We were invited to see a previous project--the Manchester Street Project. Built on the site of an old incinerator, this park and garden site sat on a three foot slab/barrier to prevent the lead-filled soil from reaching the children and the gardeners.
We were then invited to lunch with the Green Team and enjoyed talking to these ambitious, hard-working and kind teenagers.

Getting back into the van--what is Noah doing? |
When are we doing this in Athol? It's past time to bring our ethics back home.
