Pig potty... |
Our farm has a pig pen full of large, healthy swine this fall. We buy piglets in the spring, feed them through the summer and slaughter them in the fall. They are trained, as babies, to avoid an electric fence so their care and keeping is quite simple. Make sure they have fresh water (which is tricky now that the hoses are freezing) and plenty of good grub. Here's the poop situation. Pigs never urinate or defecate in their sleeping areas or where they may drink water. They choose an area, not unlike our horses, to relieve themselves. Neat, tidy and responsible poopers...
They do, however, eat like pigs:
Our group returned for our second day at Fair Wind Farms and continued our driving work with Jay and Janet Bailey. Today we each had a chance to drive two team pulling different-sized wagons through the forest and through open field. There were a variety of strategies to practice--watching the horses' feet placement, learning how to make sharp and gradual turns, how to prepare for a downhill stretch, how to gently guide the team and encourage them. I will treasure the memories of this work and plan on including horse-power in my future farm. Here is their website--- they truly have a mix of enterprises on their land and their turkeys would make a great family dinner!
