Woodlot Work and wool to "dye" for

Kiyoshi and Nora holding up the barrier
This morning, our group helped Olivier round up the last lambs to send for slaughter.  The sorting process is tricky at this time of year because the lambs are almost the size of the ewes.  This shot is taken from the wheel-well of the trailer into the barn.  We sent three lambs and now we have only our ewes and our loaner ram.

Our morning work was in the woodlot was a follow up on our trip to the woods with Jody on November 30.  We had some folks chopping trees down, we had some people skidding the logs in with the horse and the others of us bucked the logs and then split them for Maggie's cord wood.  It was cold but the work kept us warm.

Our afternoon session was with Jill Winterberry.  She walked us through the wool dying process--choosing colors, choosing method, heating water, mixing in the mordant (the chemical that makes the dye stick to the fiber) with salt and dishsoap.  While the fiber soaked in the mixture, we learned how to spin and to needle-felt.
